Wash Your Curtains Doris
Wash Your Curtains Doris
‘Wash Your Curtains, Doris’ is a textured abstract painting and part of the ‘Only Texture’ series.
In this series, Samuel experiments with and highlights the beauty of texture. He creates his signature textured surface on canvas and uses a single colour to enhance but not distract from the materials he has used. Samuel is using neutral shades of paint from brands such as Farrow and Ball and Little Greene.
‘Wash Your Curtains, Doris’ is made using cracking paste, plaster, heavy gel and pumice paste on a cotton canvas. Once all the materials were applied, layered and dried, Samuel covered every inch and crack with Farrow & Ball’s paint Cornforth White no.228. For the first painting in this series, Samuel wanted a light grey/beige that would suit any home so this was a perfect colour. He then finished the painting with Winsor & Newton gloss varnish. This glossy finish is a beautiful final touch that adds a reflective element to the painting. The gloss and the 3D elements of the painting changes the painting throughout the day as light bounces off the surface and shadows are cast. ‘Wash Your Curtains, Doris’ measures 50cm x 40cm x 2cm.
Samuel named the painting ‘Wash Your Curtains, Doris’ because the shade reminded him of net curtains. His painting ‘Clean your pond, Linda’ was very popular and his friends loved the name so he wanted to name this something equally dry and humorous.
This painting was on display at the Brick Lane Gallery at a group abstract exhibition between 29th March - 9th April.
